About the event

More than 130 million girls around the globe don’t have the opportunity to go to school. Equal access to quality education is a human right, and girls’ rights are human rights. When girls can’t go to school, the negative impacts are felt by the girls themselves, families, communities, and countries. Girl Up is excited to announce the Reading Club Challenge to raise awareness about the lack of access to quality education for adolescent girls.

To rise to the challenge, we at BIGU are calling on all middle and high school girls to read 1 book from each category (Changemakers, Historical Fiction & Fiction, and Theories for Change), and to join us at Bainbridge Public Library in a discussion about the empowering messages and implications in each. Come and share what you've learned!

Our recommendations:

(1) I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai: When her right to education in Swat, Pakistan was taken away, 15-year-old

Malala refused to stop going to school. [Category: Changemakers]

(2) The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: A young Jewish girl in Nazi Germany learns to read from stolen books - all while in hiding to save her life. [Category: Historical Fiction & Fiction]

(3) Girl Rising: Changing the World One Girl at a Time by Tanya Lee Stone: This book follows girls’ journeys to education as they confront barriers like child marriage, slavery, sex trafficking, discrimination and poverty. [Category: Theories for Change]

Read all or one of the above books and join us on August 29 from 1-3 pm at Bainbridge Public Library. See you there!
